Founded in 1582, the University of Edinburgh is one of Scotland's oldest and most prestigious institutions. Opening its doors in 1583, it holds the distinction of being the sixth-oldest university in the English-speaking world. Initially beginning as a law college, the university received a Royal Charter under King James VI of Scotland on 14 April 1582, expanding over the years to cover various disciplines.
