University of Aberdeen

Founded in 1495, the University of Aberdeen is Scotland’s third-oldest university and the fifth-oldest in the UK. Its origins can be traced back to the establishment of King’s College by William Elphinstone, Bishop of Aberdeen, and Chancellor of Scotland. The college was created with the goal of training doctors, teachers, clergy, and administrators for the northern regions of Scotland. King’s College embraced all known branches of learning, including the arts, theology, law, and medicine.

In 1497, King’s College became the first in the English-speaking world to establish a chair in medicine, reflecting the university's commitment to advancing knowledge and research. The college modelled itself after prominent European universities such as those in Paris and Bologna, marking its place as a forward-thinking institution in early Scottish higher education.

In 1593, another important institution was founded in Aberdeen: Marischal College. The union of King’s College and Marischal College in 1860 formed the modern University of Aberdeen, which continued to grow in prominence. By the 19th century, the university expanded its focus, establishing faculties in law, medicine, and science. Women were first admitted to the University in 1892, marking a significant step towards equality in higher education.

Throughout the 20th century, the University of Aberdeen consistently increased its student recruitment and today has a student population of around 14,000. The university remains dedicated to advancing knowledge, particularly in the fields of medical research and science. The Foresterhill campus, which houses the Institute of Medical Sciences, is one of Europe’s major biomedical research centres.

The university has also invested heavily in modern facilities, including the £20 million Suttie Centre for Teaching and Learning in Healthcare, which opened in 2009. With a focus on medical sciences, the University of Aberdeen continues to be a leader in research, providing state-of-the-art facilities and training for the next generation of researchers and healthcare professionals.
