Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) has a rich history that traces its origins to two key institutions: The Queen's College, Glasgow (founded in 1875) and Glasgow College of Technology (founded in 1971). Over the years, GCU has established itself as a leading higher education provider with a focus on applied education and research that addresses social needs.

The Queen's College was originally established to provide education in domestic science, and it received royal recognition during its centenary celebrations in 1975, after which it was named after Queen Elizabeth, who had been its patron since 1944. In 1993, The Queen's College and Glasgow College of Technology merged to create Glasgow Caledonian University, taking its name from 'Caledonia,' the Latin poetic name for Scotland.

The University is located on the site of the former Buchanan Street Station in Glasgow, which was built by the Caledonian Railway in the 19th century. This site is symbolic of the University’s strong historical connection to Glasgow’s industrial past, while also looking forward with its emphasis on innovation and technology.
