Queen Margaret University

Queen Margaret University (QMU) was originally founded in 1875 as the Edinburgh School of Cookery by Christian Guthrie Wright and Louisa Stevenson. It was established with the mission of providing educational opportunities for women, particularly in the area of cookery and domestic science. The founders were active in the mid-Victorian Women’s Movement, advocating for improved educational and career opportunities for women.

The university’s first significant academic publication, the "School Cookery Book," was published in 1879 and became a standard text on the topic. The institution’s mission expanded to address societal issues like the improvement of diets, especially for working-class families, which reflected the broader socio-economic issues of the time.

In 1992, the institution was granted the power to award its own degrees, a milestone that solidified its status as a recognized higher education institution. In 1999, the institution formally became Queen Margaret University College, and in 2007, it achieved full university status.
