Why does the Scottish system take 4 years?

Flexibility in Years 1 & 2: You are not locked into a single subject from day one. During your first two years, you can choose modules from outside your main subject area. For example, a business student can take modules in psychology, economics, or modern languages.
Specialisation in Years 3 & 4 (Honours Years): You select your final major at the end of Year 2 and focus deeply on your chosen field during Years 3 and 4 to earn an Honours Degree.
The "Scottish MA" Title: At Scotland’s ancient universities (University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, University of Aberdeen, University of St Andrews, and University of Dundee), an undergraduate Honours degree in the Humanities or Social Sciences is awarded as an MA (Master of Arts). Despite the title, this is an undergraduate degree (Level 6/SCQF Level 10), equivalent to a BA (Hons) from any other UK institution. Modern Scottish universities award standard BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons) degrees.
