So, your visa is approved, your university offer is locked in, and you’re getting ready for the adventure of a lifetime in Scotland!

Before you try to force zip three oversized suitcases, take a deep breath. Packing for university in a new country can feel a bit overwhelming, but ScotStudy is here to help you pack smart and travel light.

Here is our friendly guide on what MUST go in your bag—and what you can safely leave on your bedroom floor.

The Absolute Essentials (Keep These in Your Carry-On!)

Always keep your vital items in your hand luggage. If your checked bags end up on a brief detour, you will still be completely fine when you touch down.

  • Important Documents: Keep your passport, university decision letter, CAS document, accommodation confirmation, and TB test results (if applicable) easily accessible.
  • Medication: Bring a 1- to 2-month supply of any personal prescription medications, along with a signed doctor's letter in English.
  • UK Adapter: Scotland uses 3-pin Type G plugs. Keep an adapter in your backpack so you can charge your phone right after landing.
  • First-Day Funds: Have a contactless debit or credit card that works internationally, or carry a small amount of cash for immediate train or bus fares.

What to Pack: Clothes & Daily Wear

Scottish weather is famously dynamic—you can easily experience sunshine, brisk wind, and a light shower all before lunchtime! The secret to staying comfortable is mastering the art of layering.

  • A Quality Waterproof Coat: Scottish wind can easily turn an umbrella inside out! Invest in a sturdy, windproof jacket with a hood.
  • Comfortable Walking Shoes: Cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow feature beautiful cobblestone streets and rolling hills. A good pair of supportive trainers is essential for daily campus walks.
  • Versatile Warm Layers: Pack plenty of light jumpers, hoodies, cardigans, and long-sleeve tops that you can easily take off or put on as temperatures change throughout the day.
  • A Touch of Home: Bring traditional clothing for international student cultural events, plus a few small keepsakes to make your new room feel cosy right away.

What to LEAVE Behind

Save your precious luggage allowance for things you actually need. Avoid packing these heavy or easily replaceable items:

Bedding and Towels: Duvets, pillows, and bed sheets take up massive space in your trunk. You can pick up affordable, warm bedding sets at shops like Primark, IKEA, or Dunelm as soon as you settle in.

Kitchen Utensils & Pots: Heavy pans and rice cookers eat up your weight limit fast. Many student flats share cookware, or you can purchase inexpensive sets during Freshers' Week.

Bulky Tropical "Winter" Coats: Heavy coats bought in warmer regions are rarely fully waterproof or designed for Scottish weather. It is usually much better to buy your main winter coat after you arrive.

Restricted Foods: Skip fresh meat, dairy products, seeds, or unsealed perishable food. UK Customs enforces strict rules on bringing agricultural products into the country.

Quick ScotStudy Pro-Tip

Before you start packing, double-check your airline’s exact weight limit for both checked bags and hand luggage. Paying excess baggage fees at the airport is never a fun start to your journey!

And most of all don't forget to bring positive attitude !
